Respectful Relationships

The Respectful Relationships program educates students on how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence. It involves a whole school approach and requires the support and involvement of students, parents, families and staff.

From Prep to Grade 6, students complete learning tasks from the following eight topics:

1. Emotional Literacy
2. Personal Strengths
3. Positive Coping
4. Problem Solving
5. Stress Management
6. Help Seeking
7. Gender and Identity
8. Positive Gender Relationships

Social and emotional learning at Riverbend is imperative as it underpins our objective of educating students to be resilient, respectful and kind citizens. It provides students the opportunity to build positive relationships by applying the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to:

  • understand and manage emotions;
  • set and achieve positive goals;
  • feel and express empathy;
  • establish and maintain positive relationships;
  • make responsible decisions;
  • develop resilience to deal with change;
  • create positive gender norms;
  • contribute to social cohesion.

Respectful Relationships is a mandated and core component of the Victorian Curriculum. Teachers are provided with Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships learning materials that have been created by experts from Deakin University and the University of Melbourne. These resources are age appropriate and are adapted to suit our students. The activities use a range of collaborative learning activities, which assist in building students’ social skills, emotional literacy, self-awareness and empathy for others.
